Mr. Carlos de Carlos, Commercial Director from Errázuriz Winery.
Mr. De Carlos is based in London and been working for the company the last 10 years.
According to him the winery is basically very innovative and is now
going through the largest investment project since its opening in 1970.
WB Center: Could tell us more about the projects you where mentioning?
Carlos De Carlos: We are investing in new
vineyards, especially in a new wine area call Aconcagua Costa. Where
there is a new appellation in Chile.
The investment is
very consistent for the Errázuriz philosophy. What I mean is that we
have always been based in the Aconcagua Valley, mainly in the central
part of the valley. Now we have been investing in the coastal area very
closed to Viña del Mar, 10 km from the sea side, cooling climate area,
a beautiful rolling hills plantation that goes also towards inlands.
Very closed to the Aconcagua Mountain we are investing in a new
property that we call "Max 7" that are for red wines.
Additionally to the investment in vineyards that is the sourcing of the
grapes for the premium quality wines for the future, we are investing
in 2 new wineries:
One is for premium wine range that we call "Max Reserva" and the other
one is from the most spectacular wine we have ever had called "Don
Maximiano Icon Winery" for the honour of the founder of the
winery. That is a winery very dedicated to the production of icon
wines. That is to say the top wines of our group: Don Maximiano,
La Cumbre, Kai and Seña.
WB Center:
You were mentioning that you also have done some innovations within the
grape subject. Can you explain what grapes are you using and how you
are using them?
Carlos De Carlos:
In the cool area of Aconcagua Costa which is a new area for Chile, we
are basically planting a cool climate grape variety. In the past our
country and winery have basically focused in red wines. However, now we
have gone more and more into the cool climate like Sauvignon Blanc,
Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from cool climate area but are also using the
Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne grapes.
We are also doing the same with grapes from single vineyard wines planting Shiraz and Merlot into cool climate areas.
WB Center:
You will in the month of December in Stockholm launch a new wine call
"Errázuriz Four Elements". What's so special about that wine?
Carlos De Carlos:
Firstly this wine is very unique. The name of the wine is because the
wine has four type of grapes: Chardonnay, Viognier, Marsanne and
Rousanne. It's unique and exclusive because it's the first time
in Chile using the typical Rhone valley grapes Marsanne and Roussanne.
This was more like a try. So we started with the Chardonnay because
Chardonnay is a grape that we know well and keeps structure to the wine
so it's like the back wall of the wine. Then, we added a bit of
Viognier.
The Marsanne is quite interesting in the mouth, very
sudden in aromatics almost no aromas at all, and clear in color.
However, the Roussanne is very good in the facilities of aromatics
therefore you need to combine them both. They support each other. Both
together give some floral aromas; in tannins the evolution of the wine
gets some honey flavour.
